Poached figs

A convenient no-shopping-required last minute dessert. Bring water to a boil with sugar, star anise, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods or whatever wintry spices you have handy. You can also add some brandy. Start reducing, then add dry figs and simmer 10-15 minutes until soft. Remove the figs, reduce the liquid further, strain. Serve with vanilla ice-cream.
